Nagoya Castle’s beauty is worthy of world-wide recognition. The people of Nagoya are both proud and honored to have such a special and historic site in their city. In 1615 the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the most famous samurai warriors at the time, had brought an end to the Sengoku period – the period of warring states. It was at this time that he built the castle as a military base. This marked the beginning of Edo Period – a time of peace that lasted about 265 years.

It features an elegant Japanese architectural style exterior suitable for viewing Noh plays, an interior with a scent of wood, a Noh stage made of Kiso cypress, and a spacious 630-seat venue. The Noh stage is used for traditional performing arts such as Noh and Kyogen, as well as for various events such as international conferences, lectures, and weddings. There is also a conference room (with instructor waiting room) with a capacity of 99 people, which can be used for training and meetings. The exhibition room, which is free to enter, uses panels and videos to explain the history and charm of Nohgaku, as well as Nagoya’s Nohgaku, in an easy-to-understand manner, even for beginners. It is said that it was first commissioned from Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine in 1495 and dedicated to this place on the banks of Mt. Namikoshi, and is depicted in the Owari Meisho Zue. Although it was renovated in the Showa period, it is thought that many of the materials from the Edo period remain.
